If you have dental insurance, the benefits you haven’t used this year will most likely disappear on January 1. As your dentist in Cedar Park, we see it every December: families who meant to schedule a cleaning or finish a crown run out of time — and leave hundreds of dollars of coverage on the table.
The good news? With a little planning in October and November, it’s easy to make the most of every dollar your plan provides. Here’s our year-end guide for Cedar Park patients.
Why dental benefits are “use it or lose it”
Most dental insurance plans run on a calendar year. On January 1, three things reset:
- Your annual maximum — the most your plan will pay toward your care in a year. Whatever is left over usually doesn’t carry forward.
- Your deductible — the amount you pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in. If you’ve already met it this year, treatment you finish before December 31 can cost you less than the same treatment in January.
- Your preventive visits — most plans cover two cleanings and exams per year, often at or near 100%. Skip one and it’s simply gone.
That’s why the last few months of the year are the smartest time to schedule care you’ve been putting off.
Your 5-step year-end dental checklist
1. Check what you have left
Call your insurance company or log in to your member portal and look for three numbers: your remaining annual maximum, whether you’ve met your deductible, and how many cleanings you’ve used. Even easier — call our Cedar Park office at (512) 670-8880 and our team will check your benefits for you.
2. Book your second cleaning and exam
If you haven’t had two cleanings and exams this year, book now. Preventive visits are usually the most generously covered part of your plan, and they catch small problems — like a cavity that only needs a filling — before they turn into bigger, more expensive ones.
3. Finish treatment you’ve been postponing
Was a filling, crown or root canal recommended at your last visit? Completing it before December 31 lets this year’s benefits help pay for it. Waiting until January means a new deductible — and the problem may get worse in the meantime.
4. Plan larger treatment across two plan years
For bigger treatment plans — like dental implants or several crowns — Dr. Samir Momin can often split the work across December and January so you can use two years of benefits for one treatment plan.
5. Use your FSA or HSA dollars
Dental care is generally an eligible expense for flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs). FSA balances often have a year-end deadline or only a small carryover, so a dental visit is a practical way to put that money to work.
A simple example: what waiting until January can cost
Every plan is different, but here’s an illustrative example of why timing matters.
Say your plan has a $1,500 annual maximum, a $50 deductible you’ve already met this year, and covers crowns at 50%. Dr. Momin recommends a crown in October.
- Finish it in November: your deductible is already met, and your plan pays its share from this year’s remaining maximum.
- Wait until February: you’ll pay a brand-new deductible first, and the crown uses up part of next year’s maximum — leaving less for anything else you need in the new year.
Multiply that by two cleanings you didn’t schedule and a filling you postponed, and it’s easy to see how families lose real value every December. This example is for illustration only — your actual costs depend on your plan, and we’ll give you a personalized estimate before any treatment.
Year-end tips for kids and teens
Children’s benefits reset on January 1 too, and they’re often the most valuable part of a family plan:
- Six-month checkups and cleanings — two per year are typically covered.
- Dental sealants — many plans cover sealants on permanent molars for patients under 18. They take minutes, don’t hurt, and prevent the cavities most common in kids.
- Fluoride and X-rays — often covered on a set schedule, so check whether your child is due.
We see patients of every age at Town Center Dental Cedar Park — from a toddler’s first visit to grandparents — and we can book the whole family back-to-back in a single trip before the holidays.
How our team checks your benefits
You don’t have to decode your insurance on your own. When you call our Cedar Park office, we:
- Take your insurance details and member ID over the phone.
- Verify your remaining annual maximum, deductible and coverage percentages with your insurer.
- Review any treatment Dr. Momin has recommended and give you a clear estimate of your share.
- File your claims directly after your visit, so there’s no paperwork for you.
Which insurance plans we accept in Cedar Park
Town Center Dental Cedar Park is in-network with Delta Dental and accepts all PPO dental plans, including plans from Aetna, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Concordia. Many Cedar Park and Leander families have coverage through their employers across the Austin area — whichever plan you have, we’ll verify your benefits and file your claims for you.
Already used your annual maximum?
You still have options. If your plan has paid out its maximum for the year, you can:
- Use CareCredit or LendingClub patient financing to spread the remaining cost into monthly payments.
- Schedule the next phase of treatment for January, when your benefits renew.
- Ask about our current specials on implants, dentures and new-patient visits.
Don’t wait for the December rush
November and December are the busiest months of the year for dental offices in Cedar Park — everyone is trying to use their benefits at once, and holiday schedules fill quickly.
